HELGI TOMASSON’S NUTCRACKER CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN SAN FRANCISCO, RETURNS TO THE STAGE DECEMBER 6–29

Single tickets to all 24/25 Season performances on sale now

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA) November 6, 2024—San Francisco Ballet (SF Ballet)’s Nutcracker returns to the War Memorial Opera House December 6–29, celebrating the 20th anniversary of former Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson’s production with an extended run of shows. Special performances include the third-annual Sensory Friendly Performance and school-time performances for young audiences. As the first American ballet company to present a full-length Nutcracker in 1944, SF Ballet paved the way for this production to become a holiday classic and continues the beloved tradition in the spirit of innovation.

Set in early twentieth-century San Francisco and inspired by the Panama Pacific International Exposition, Nutcracker showcases exquisite choreography by Tomasson, scenic design by Tony Award-winner Michael Yeargan, costume design by Tony Award-winner Martin Pakledinaz, lighting design by James F. Ingalls, and projection design by Wendall K. Harrington.

This season, casting for Nutcracker includes an impressive slate of role debuts, featuring Soloist Kamryn Baldwin and Corps de Ballet Member Seojeong Yun as the Snow Queen; Soloist Sasha Mukhamedov in the distinguished Grand Pas de Deux; and Principal Dancer Harrison James, Soloist Fernando Carratalá Coloma, and Corps de Ballet Member Adrian Zeisel as the Nutcracker Prince.

Additional debuts include Carratalá Coloma, Corps de Ballet Member Rubén Cítores Nieto, Soloist Victor Prigent, and Zeisel as the Snow King, and Baldwin, Corps de Ballet Member Jihyun Choi, and Yun as the Sugar Plum Fairy. More casting details can be found here (subject to change).

School-Time Performances for Young Audiences, December 10 & 17 at 11am
SF Ballet will offer two school-time performances designed to provide K-12 students the opportunity to experience this magical performance on a field trip. These weekday mid-morning matinees are ideal for school groups as well as families with young children. As part of SF Ballet’s commitment to arts education and sharing the transformative power of the performing arts with young audiences, approximately half of the 3,000 seat Opera House will be reserved for students from SF Unified School District elementary schools through SF Ballet’s partnership residency program with SFUSD. The remaining seats are available to the general public and other Bay Area school groups. To purchase tickets to a school-time performance, contact Ticket Services at groups@sfballet.org.

Nutcracker Benefit Luncheon: Land of Dreams, December 14 at 12pm
Co-chaired by SF Ballet Board of Trustees member, and former SF Ballet dancer, Alexandra Newman and Sarah Heck, the annual fundraising luncheon held at Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall includes crafts and activities, appearances from Nutcracker characters, and the opportunity to take part in a post-performance, on-stage snowfall while SF Ballet Orchestra plays holiday carols. Proceeds from this event support SF Ballet’s education, training, and community programming, including our continued partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of SF, which began with the Don Fisher Clubhouse in 2015 and has since grown to include fourteen clubhouses in San Francisco. Tickets to the event range from $1,500 to $25,000; more information can be found here.

Sensory Friendly Performance, December 29 at 11am
Presented in collaboration with Autism Society San Francisco Bay Area, SF Ballet’s third-annual Sensory Friendly Performance includes special accommodations to Nutcracker and the theater-going experience to make neurodiverse audiences feel welcome to experience this cherished holiday tradition in a relaxed, inclusive, and accepting environment.
