Christopher Wheeldon: 25 Years of Innovation and Brilliance
Celebrating Christopher Wheeldon’s Impact on SF Ballet
This year marks a milestone for choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, celebrating 25 years since his first creation here at SF Ballet. Known as one of the most innovative and sought-after choreographers of his generation, Wheeldon’s vision has left an indelible mark on the company and the dance world at large.
Wheeldon’s journey with SF Ballet began in 2000 when, fresh from a successful career as a dancer with The Royal Ballet and New York City Ballet, then SF Ballet Artistic Director, Helgi Tomasson, commissioned him for his first work with the company, Sea Pictures.

Wheeldon expressed his gratitude towards Helgi Tomasson, stating, “I owe a lot to Helgi. He believed in me, which I so very much appreciate.”
His works quickly became known for their inventive structures, emotional depth, and seamless marriage of classical technique with modern sensibilities. Over the years, Wheeldon created numerous ballets for the company, each one pushing artistic boundaries and captivating audiences. Signature works include Continuum, Ghosts, Rush, Number Nine, Finale Finale, and his reimagined full-length Cinderella, which demonstrate his ability to balance tradition and innovation. Wheeldon’s vision has helped redefine what ballet can be, drawing new and enthusiastic audiences to the art form.
As we honor his 25 years working with us, the celebration also reflects the company’s commitment to fostering creativity and excellence. Wheeldon’s legacy here in San Francisco is a testament to the power of collaboration, storytelling, and pushing the boundaries of possibility in dance.
